Media Tour in La Union with the Department of Agrarian Reform

The Association of Tourism Industries and Networks in La Union represented by Airwind Bautista, ATIN-Lu Tourism Director for Events & Publicity joined the Department of Agrarian Reform’s Media Tour on Farm Sites.

The Department of Agrarian Reform personnels guided the media at the
Halog West, Tubao, La Union, the site of the office of Halog West Producers Cooperative wherein Nena Panes shared the trials and triumphs of the said cooperative who produced the famous cornick of Tubao.
Going to the said place is quite an adventure for guests but a daily struggle to the people of the place since they need to cross the river thru a bamboo racket. Thru the assistance of DAR, the members of the cooperative were able to survive the trials of the production and marketing of the cornick industry of Brgy. Halog West.
It was also mentioned that farmers of tobacco turned into planting corns since they can harvest three times a year which means more profit.
It can be noted that sampling the cornick, it is less salty and you can crunch more cornicks instead of garlic, salt and vetsin, making it to taste better and healthier to eat.

Rosalina Vere, Manager and Jovelyn Carrera, Treasurer wherein they shared how their cooperative had conceptualized to make salted egg as an income generating project, but due to low supply of eggs, selling pork is an additional project and since they recently had been trained, they will be making TOGI chips as well as continue to construct Bio Mass as the cooperative had been tasked by clients in need.
Indeed it was a great help that DAR provided assistance to the cooperative since they were able to make a good start in their income generating projects which will be a source of livelihood to the members.

Sta. Cecilia Producers Cooperative, Sta. Cecilia, Aringay, La Union

The project assistance of DAR to the Sta. Cecilia Producers Cooperative includes the truactor utilized for the block farming, cattle raising of 9 cows for 9 farmers and the Solar Power Irrigation System.

The media talked to Robinson Dulay, Chairman of the cooperative, who shared about the benefits of the projects especially the solar power irrigation system that helps them to save on diesel, he also mention the needs for improvement like a bigger motor and more solar panel for a stronger flow of water.

The block farming also benefits the farmers since it aides them to have a common farming practice and unified marketing that will lessen the burden of the farmers.

The cattle raising is a potential income generating too since the cow are in good shape because of the abundant grass as their food. Indeed partnership of the public offices and the farmers gives a lot of potential and benefits for economic growth.
